Woke culture

I recently watched this video and I am in distress about woke culture, or rather what it has become. (Side note: This post and video contains strong language.)

I obviously don’t agree with everything that was said, but I can try to understand their point of view. That is also what I’m going to ask of you, dear reader. Try to bear with me and understand my point of view even if you don’t agree with it.

The problem

It feels like we’re not allowed to have any constructive dialogue anymore. No one can just agree to disagree. This attitude of ‘if you don’t agree with me then you are (insert category here)-ist/phobic” is problematic.

Initially, the whole point of wokeness was to redress injustices when it started, which is great. But now it has evolved into this toxic culture of forcing your preferences and opinions on other people. It feels like people are saying, “This is my thing and you MUST care about it or find it attractive”.

Now people are afraid to ask questions or start discussions for fear of being cancelled.

While we’re talking about ‘cancelling’

Then people are being cancelled for what they’re saying—even if it was a joke… during a comedy special.

Yes, sometimes comedians go too far, and they should know better. However, when you go to a stand-up comedy show, you agree to the social contract that everything that is said is a joke—it’s nothing personal. Now, this thing (comedy) that brings so many people joy is at risk.

At this point, can I refer to the incident at the Oscars? There was so much criticism about what Chris Rock said. I didn’t even get the joke until my husband explained it to me. For a moment I thought, “Oh, I didn’t know there’s going to be a GI Jane 2. Jada Pinkett Smith is a badass. She’ll be really good in it.” And then there was a slap on stage.

I just find it funny that Americans lost their mind about it, and how Chris Rock ‘deserved’ it. But at the same time, they literally elected a president who bragged that he grabbed women by their “pussy”. Why didn’t you cancel the orange man?

Lastly

So, if your opinion is not ‘woke’ enough, then you’re labelled a (insert category here)-ist/phobic and cancelled.

It is toxic, and ironically, if you’re not open for discussion, it’s oppressive. What are we to do? I have no idea.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Meh.
