I’m a blackbelt in karate and it took me 5 years to get my dan (which is the standard amount of time if you don’t skip belts). Starting any martial art is a major commitment, that is if you want to get anywhere with it. It’s strange how I ended up as a blackbelt because it’s not something I planned. I’m getting ahead of myself – let me explain how I started doing karate.
I am a huge fan of Douglas Adam’s “The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy.” If you’re not familiar with the series (in book, radio, TV formats) and you have a quirky and witty sense of humour, I would recommend it. If you hate British comedy, then it’s not going to be your cup of tea. In this series, there is a character, Marvin, and there’s something about him that I love.
In a couple of weeks, our matric class has its ten-year reunion. I’m not going, because I’ve spent the last ten years avoiding 90% of the people I went to school with. However, I do have fond memories of these years - which is why I will now share my nostalgia about my school days.
